Founded in 1981 by Rezo Gabriadze, the Marionette Theatre is a cornerstone of his artistic world. Seeking complete creative freedom, Gabriadze turned to puppetry, where he could write, design, and direct without compromise. His theatre embodies the poetic object theatre tradition, elevating marionettes beyond mere entertainment into profound storytelling.

History
Located at 13 Shavteli Street in Tbilisi’s historic district, the 80-seat theatre quickly became a cultural landmark. Over four decades, Gabriadze's productions have captivated audiences worldwide, touring festivals in Edinburgh, Avignon, New York, and beyond. His unique blend of puppetry, visual poetry, and Georgian folklore has made his work universally resonant.
In 2017, his son, Leo Gabriadze, assumed artistic direction, reviving classics and reimagining old works. The theatre continues to perform four signature productions: Autumn of My Spring, Alfred and Violetta, Ramona, and The Diamond of Marshal de Fantie.
A defining feature of the theatre is its whimsical clock tower, designed by Gabriadze, where an angel rings a bell every hour. This architectural marvel, along with the theatre’s enchanting performances, cements its place as one of Tbilisi’s most beloved cultural institutions.

The Eccentrics Premiere
The Gabriadze Foundation, together with VISA and SOLO, is proud to present The Eccentrics, a new production by the Gabriadze Theatre that premiered in May 2026. Directed by Leo Gabriadze and based on Rezo Gabriadze’s play, short story, and opera libretto, The Eccentrics explores the journey of a young dreamer and an old inventor who build a flying machine in an attempt to reach the ultimate point of liberation.
This premiere continues the Foundation’s mission to preserve and develop Rezo Gabriadze’s artistic legacy, introducing new audiences to his poetic and deeply human storytelling.
